Harvey Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering This thesis document was issued under the authority of another institution, not NPS. Not believed to be a CIVINS (Civilian Institutions) title. This thesis describes the programming of amidship structural design procedures for the IBM-704 computer. Two problems, the selection of scantlings and plating for the amidships portion of a ship's hull and the design of a transverse web frame are programmed for a digital computer. A detailed explanation of the programs and a brief discussion of the methods of approach for adapting these design procedures to a digital computer are included. Using rather simple engineering criteria, these programs essentially carry out the design procedures for the amidship's structure. The inputs are those forces moments, dimensions and material characteristics which are either known or can be readily determined by the user. The information resulting from these programs is given in a convenient form. The programs have been written in such a manner that they may be easily followed and altered. It is strongly emphasized that these programs are written with a factor of safety of 1.0 on the yield strength of the material. By suitably selecting the input information any reasonable factor of safety may be obtained. 2012-08-29T23:30:38Z 2012-08-29T23:30:38Z 1960-06-01 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10945/12013 en_US Massachusetts Institute of Technology
