Summary:ABSTRACT === This report looks at the negative impact that the representation of female game characters such as Lara Croft has on female gamers. The visual development of Lara Croft is analysed in a systematic manner by comparing the evolution of her appearance from Tomb Raider 1 through to Tomb Raider 6. From this it is concluded that Lara Croft's depiction has not become more appealing to female gamers. Using semiotic theory, this report goes on to explore the possible meanings or messages that Lara Croft's image produces and presents to society. The effect of these messages on women and children is discussed, together with ways to prevent them from recurring in future games. This is followed by a case study of the female character, Chase Corrado, who features in the game Chase: Hollywood Stunt Driver. The character is analysed in terms of the framework and methodology used to analyse Tomb Raider. It is concluded that Chase Corrado is one of the many female game characters who follow the example of Lara Croft in being designed for the male market.
