Master of Science in Medicine, Child Health, Neurodevelopment === Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the current decision-making processes that are in place when inserting gastrostomy tubes in children within a public hospital setting. Design: The study adopted a quantitative approach where a descriptive design was employed based on information obtained from questionnaires. Participants: Professionals were selected from three public hospitals who are involved in the decision-making process when considering the insertion of gastrostomy tubes in children. Implications: This study determined if there was a common decision-making process between professionals when inserting gastrostomy tubes in children as well as ascertained whether the implementation of guidelines would be beneficial to assist with the process. Results: The study showed that there is a multidisciplinary team involved in the decision making process. Professionals reported that the main reason for the insertion of a gastrostomy tube was because of neurological disorders. Some assessments are being conducted prior to the insertion. The study showed that there is a confusion around the assessments used to investigate gastroesophageal reflux. Counselling the families surrounding the gastrostomy tube was contacted mostly by the speech-language therapists and dieticians, to ensure they know how to feed and troubleshoot any problems arising from the gastrostomy tube. Complications such as tube dislodgement, leaking tubes and infections of the stoma are reportedly common within the hospitals studied. Conclusion: A checklist was compiled to assist professionals with the decision-making for the insertion of gastrostomy tubes as well as the follow up plan surrounding the care.
