With the continued increase in network speed, queuing and scheduling of traffic needs to be performed at higher speed. In addition, processing co-existing IP traffic from different applications requiring QoS may complicate these functions. Virtual Output Queuing (VOQ) is a strategy that can queue traffic at line rate and achieve 100% throughput with an effective scheduling algorith. It maintains a separate queue for each output port at each inputport. With N input ports and N output ports in the router ther are N² such virtual output queues at the input.
