A general review of the literature pertaining to the combustion of coal in a fluidized bed of inert. particles as well as the transfer of heat from the fluidized bed to immersed cooling surfaces is presented. In view of the fluidized bed furnace incorporating the freeboard region, a review of furnace design methods is also presented.
