This study is focusing on the uses and significances of Venda female clothes. Since documentation of Venda clothes is limited, this study is therefore aiming at documenting and analyzing symbols, functions and meanings of Venda female dress. The Methods used were: unstructured interview, non-participant observation, review of documents and the use of audio-visuals. Interviewees of both genders were of different ages. Open-ended questions and probes were used. Information was found from key information rich participants through snowballing. People and settings were observed and findings were recorded in the journal. Findings suggest that Venda clothes are non- verbal communication, indicating age group, rank, authority, status, identity and powers (supernatural and sacred). Some are specifically for social and religious ceremonies. Venda female clothes are also worn for psychological and physical protection. These are:Tshideka, Shedo, Mukhasi/Musisi, Tshirivha ,Gwana, Phale ,Nwenda, Thaula, Palu and matongo. Accessories also bear meanings. Venda attire often is oblivious of the significances that accompany the wearing thereof. Sometimes dress code goes beyond gender boundaries. Anything done or applied on the body has significance. The same garment when worn at different areas conveys different meanings. The way the garment is worn depicts the particular clan. 2004 Text PDF en © Tshwane University of Technology http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1000935
