ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis I examine the extent to which interpretations of African material culture play a role in the creation and visualisation of an ‘African aesthetic style’ in South African contemporary jewellery practices. My investigation of an ‘African aesthetic style’ in this thesis is informed by the production, display and writings on African cultural objects. I demonstrate contemporary jewellery design to derive from a critical methodology, particularly as it facilitates a renegotiation of the relationship and dialogue between the producer and viewer of contemporary jewellery objects. 2013-02-19T10:28:11Z 2013-03-15T07:34:00Z 2013-02-19T10:28:11Z 2013-03-15T07:34:00Z 2013-03 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/80080 en_ZA Stellenbosch University 107 p. : col. ill.
