Florida State University Text eng 212 p. This study investigated the relationships among user characteristics and satisfaction with portable computer systems implementation in a law enforcement organization. The research questions that were investigated are the following: (1) Does prior individual experience with computers predict satisfactory implementation of computers in this setting? (2) Does a positive attitude toward computers predict satisfactory implementation of computers in this setting? (3) Does an individual's perceived satisfaction with organizational communication predict satisfactory implementation of computers in this setting? (4) Does positive attitude about job satisfaction predict satisfactory implementation of computers in this setting? (5) Is there a change in computer attitude after using computers in this setting? (6) Are there relationships among prior computer experience, locus of control, attitude toward computers, job satisfaction and organizational communication in this setting? Partial regressions were conducted on various user characteristics to determine predictive ability for computer implementation satisfaction. The attitude factor "Belief in Benefit of Computers" after implementation was significant in predicting computer satisfaction factors Format($<$.05), Accuracy($<$.05), Flexibility($<$.05) plus Composite($<$.01) computer satisfaction. Overall attitude after implementation was significant in predicting computer satisfaction with Ease of Use($<$.05), Flexibility($<$.01), and Composite($<$.01) computer satisfaction. Computer experience after receiving the computer, but prior to implementation, was significant in predicting satisfaction with Ease of Use($<$.05), Format($<$.05), and Flexibility($<$.01). Organizational communication was not useful in predicting computer implementation satisfaction. Job satisfaction was not useful in predicting computer implementation satisfaction. The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test indicated that there was no change in attitude as users used the computer. An interrelationship model was developed using confirmatory factor analysis that identified five latent variables: Experience, Usage Fear, Fear of Loss of Control, Belief in the Benefit of Computers, and Organizational Satisfaction. Among these variables were three correlations. Usage Fear was positively correlated with Fear of Loss of Control; Computer Experience was negatively correlated with Usage Fear and positively correlated with Belief in Benefit of Computers.
