The research presented here explores how one elementary school teacher and her students came to understand what is expected of them when asked to engage in an integrated science and engineering unit on simple circuits. Analysis of whole class and small group video transcripts and artifacts revealed that an integrated approach may be more problematic that promising for teachers and students. We discuss these findings and what they might mean when engineering is seen as an avenue for applying science knowledge in classrooms.
