Common Injuries Among College Clarinetists: Definitions, Causes, Treatments, and Prevention Methods

The purpose of this project is to define the playing-related injuries common to clarinetists, list causes, and explore treatment and prevention methods. An online survey was conducted to yield information of the location and degree of pain and numbness, diagnoses, what treatment methods were used, and demographic information. The survey was sent to clarinet professors throughout the United States and requested that it be forwarded to their university or college students. A total of 601 students responded and revealed 83% (n=500) experienced pain or discomfort and 37% (n=213) numbness while playing the clarinet. Twenty-one percent (n=128) of respondents had been diagnosed with a playing-related injury. Diagnosed injuries are discussed, as well as causes and risk factors that can provoke or contribute to the injury.
