The treatise emphasizes three points: first, the process by which guitarists become aware of the elements of interpretation in John Dowland's solo lute music; second, the conscious clarification of interpretive goals and objectives on the part of the guitarist; and third, the methods and techniques used to achieve each goal. Each element of interpretation is applied to an original transcription of "Queen Elizabeth's Galliard P. 41," "Lachrimae Pavan P. 15," "Farewell Fantasy P. 3," and "Forlorn Hope Fancy P. 2." The reader will, ultimately, have a framework to engage in the process of interpreting John Dowland's solo lute work and will also have insight into the interpretive process in general.
