Despite the work that has been done on the Unitarian controversy in nineteenth century Boston, little is known about the effects of the controversy on women. This study examines the lives of Catharine Beecher, Elizabeth Peabody, and Mary Ware. An analysis of their lives yields answers to the question: How did the Unitarian controversy affect the private and social lives of these women?
