It was originally published in 1887, one year before the famous bassoonist's death. Since that time, it has been revised many times by several different editors throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Weissenborn's original edition and all revised editions are out of date. Of the two current editions, the most popular version was first published in 1930, although much of its material comes from earlier editions. Many important approaches regarding the bassoon's performance practice and pedagogy have changed since then. Additionally, the fingering charts provided in both current editions are missing keys found on current models and have numerous errors. Modern philosophies in music pedagogy reveal that Weissenborn's method, in both its original and revised forms, has many deficiencies. These problems include poor concept sequencing and a shortage of explanatory text, to name a few. Moreover, current editions of the method contain many editing errors and inconsistencies. This treatise has three purposes: to present a background on the life of Julius Weissenborn and his Practical Method for Bassoon, to pedagogically analyze the method, and to propose a revised edition. A Treatise Submitted to the College of Music in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Music. Spring Semester, 2006. March 29, 2006. Bassoon Pedagogy, Bassoon Performance, Bassoon Tutor, Fagott, Fagotto, Basson Includes bibliographical references.
