Effect of Changing Task Characteristics and Work Environment on Mainland China Newspaper Reporters' Job Satisfaction and Turnover Intention

Most studies have only generally discussed the impact of new technology on reporters’ work routines and ethics without providing a theoretical examination and explanation. To fill that research gap, this study was designed to discover how new technology influences reporters’ job satisfaction and turnover intention in Mainland China newspaper newsrooms by applying Job Characteristics Theory (JCT) and the Job Demands-Resources Model (JD-R). === Newspaper reporters from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou (N=343) were surveyed. The results showed that, although Mainland Chinese newspaper reporters are less satisfied with their jobs within the context of new technology, their turnover intentions are quite low. In regression analyses, career prospects and autonomy were the best predictors of reporters’ job satisfaction. Similarly, in predicting reporters’ turnover intentions, career prospects were the most significant predictor. To the contrary, skill variety and workload had no effect on either reporters’ job satisfaction or their turnover intention. === This study also developed a predictive model using career prospects, task significance, and autonomy to identify their interrelationships with job satisfaction and turnover intention during a time of change. === The findings of this study contribute new insights to journalism research that can not only draw newspapers executives’ attention to the impact of adopting new technology in the newsroom, but also improve researchers’ theoretical understanding of Mainland Chinese newspaper reporters’ job satisfaction and turnover intention. === Key Words: Job Satisfaction, Turnover Intention, Job Characteristics Theory, Job Demands-Resources Model, Newspaper Reporters === Guo, Lei. === Thesis M.Phil.
