論文旨在研究香港現代建築的特徵，研究時段設定為1930年代至1970年代。 === 研究基於對研究年代範圍內800多個建成作品及方案的廣泛調研，通過建築案例的觀察和分析、與其它國家或地區的現代建築特別是現代運動的比較，結合香港的社會和自然條件，辨析香港現代建築在形式、成因及發展軌跡上的具體特徵。 === 論文包括四個主要章節，第一章詳細介紹建築調研及數據庫的建立；“歷史中的建築”按時間順序檢測香港建築的现代化进程；“地方上的建築”一章探究香港現代建築在地方社會、自然條件下產生的形式特徵；“建築師的建築”一章研究建築師的背 景及他們影響下產生的建築特徵。 === 論文主要揭示了三點：第一，香港現代建築的發展具有獨特的因素和麵貌；第二，香港嚴苛的社會和自然條件產生了一些具體的形式特徵；第三，香港建築師背景多元，他們的作品一定程度呈現出其背景帶來的建築特徵，同時，實踐條件及其影響下的設 計方式削弱了其背景帶來的影響。 === 論文首先對香港建築歷史作出知識貢獻；其次論文揭示的建築特徵及潛在規律可以啟 發當代建築實踐；最後，論文揭示的建築特徵亦可對當前愈熱的建築遺產保護提供參考。 === This dissertation is a study of the characteristics of modern architecture in Hong Kong from the 1930s to 1970s. === Based on a comprehensive survey of over 800 buildings and projects from the 1930 to 1970s, this research analyses these cases and links them to modern architecture in other countries or regions of the world especially the Modern Movement, and to the social and natural conditions of Hong Kong. The overall concern is with formal characteristics, causal factors and lines of historical development. === The dissertation consists of four main chapters. The first one introduces the building survey especially a database which is used to store and process the achievement of the survey. The sec- ond, “Buildings in the history”, chronologically examines the modernisation of the buildings in the historical process. The third, “Buildings in the place”, explores the formal characteristics shaped by local conditions. And the last, “Buildings by the architects”, sets out to examine the backgrounds of architects and explore the characteristics contributed by the architects. === At the end, this dissertation reveals that: 1) the development of modern architecture in Hong Kong had specific factors and scenario; 2) the forcing conditions of Hong Kong had gener- ated certain formal characteristics; 3) the backgrounds of the architects in Hong Kong were diverse and had been rendered in their works to some extent, while they were practising under very restrictive conditions and had generated a specific design approach in general, which had facilitated the modernity and regionality whilst diluted the influences brought about by their backgrounds. === The dissertation in the first place aims to construct a knowledge of modern architecture in Hong Kong, in other words, to historize and intellectualise modern architecture in Hong Kong. Second of all, it aims to enlighten contemporary architectural practice by uncovering the hid- den architectural crystallisations and theorems.
