Description
Summary:A review is made of the available literature relating to the aerodynamic generation of noise from gaseous jets, with particular references to the physiological and physical aspects, both theoretical and practical. It is shown that noise generated by jet engines constitutes a serious problem and that thus will soon become a limiting factor or power and thrust of such engines. Jet engine noise and model jet noise can be broadly correlated, but the large number of parameters involved and the shortage of data limits the usefulness of such a correlation. In particular, the effect of turbulence has been neglected in much experimental work, although this is one of the most important parameters. The design and manufacture of apparatus to investigate the affect of the Mach number on jet noise is described although the experimental work has not yet been completed and is not included, but is to follow in a later report.
