Viburnum rufidulum has been considered in the past to be a variety of V. prunifolium L. Also, at one time V. cassinaides L was thought of as a variety of V. nudum L. In addition to these species, V. Opulus var. americanum (Mill) Ait. and V. Lentago L. were studied. The vascular structure was determined primarily by microscopic examination of stained serial sections cut in a transverse plane.
