Summary: | Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University === The purpose of this investigation has been to determine the taxonomic relationships existing between certain medicinal and closely allied species of Viburnums, belonging to the Caprifoliaceae, by studying the floral morphology of their flowers. Viburnum rufidulum has been considered in the past to
be a variety of V. prunifolium L. Also, at one time V. cassinaides L was thought of as a variety of V. nudum L. In addition to these species, V. Opulus var. americanum (Mill) Ait.
and V. Lentago L. were studied. The vascular structure was determined primarily by microscopic examination of stained serial sections cut in a transverse plane. The flowers used were either collected from living plants and preserved directly in 70% Ethyl alcohol or were taken from herbarium sheets of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and treated with dilute potassium hydroxide solution before embedding in paraffin. |
