Summary: | Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University === It has been found that morpholine behaves like a typical secondary amine insofar as addition to unsaturated carbonyl compounds is concerned. It adds readily to methyl acrylate to form the ester of β-4-morpholine propionic acid. Originally it was intended to prepare a series of esters containing the morpholine ring by analogous reactions, but so much time was spent in preparing, purifying, and identifying the ester that this idea was not fulfilled.
The main accomplishment of this thesis has been to add to the long list of organic compounds the following nitrogen-containing compounds:
1. Methyl β-4-mcrpholine propionate
2. " " " hydrochloride
3. β-4-morpholine propionic acid
4. " " " hydrochloride
5. Ammonium β-4-morpholine propionate
6. N(β-4-morpholine propionyl)morpholine
7. " " " picrate
It is felt, from evidence in the literature, that at least some of the compounds prepared should possess physiological ectivity.
