From a practical point of view, the phenomena dates back to the late 19th century to Oliver Heaviside and J. J. Thomson who noted the effects and were negatively impressed. Around 1916 industrial scientists decided that something of a gainful nature could be made from a loss previously considered in the same economic sense as mechanical friction. |
