The title 'reward for sacrifice' alludes to the feature that the Indo-Iranian ritual forms part of a system of do-ut-des. It is inspired by the aspect of the story related in Y 9.1-15, that the four personages who pressed Hom before Zara?uštra, were rewarded with the birth of a son for their efforts. The work provides a text-critical edition of the Pahlavi version based on six manuscripts of the Iranian Pahlavi Yasna copies (Pt4, Mf4, G14, F2, T6, T55b) and of three manuscripts of the Indian Pahlavi Yasna (J2, K5, M1). While the transliteration and the variant reading are included in an Appendix, the main body of the thesis provides the transcription of the text and a translation together with a detailed commentary and an introduction. The present work goes beyond earlier studies by covering the glosses of the Pahlavi version as well as the translation of the Av. original, and by investigating the reception of themes of this text in Indo-Iranian and in later Zoroastrian literature.SOAS, University of Londonhttps://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.766722http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/30320/Electronic Thesis or Dissertation |
