Summary:The overall aim of the work submitted here was to advance and disseminate knowledge In the field of expert systems in information science. More specifically the objectives were: (1) to review the field to date; (2) to develop expert system prototypes which give advice on online database selection and, to a much lesser extent, search statement modification; (3) to examine the roles which information professionals might play in expert system development; (4) to examine the expert systems teaching and research being undertaken in Library and Information Science (LIS) departments in the UK, North America and Australia.
