A text linguistic approach to Qur'anic discourse : Surat al-Ma'idah

The present work deals with text linguistics as an approach to the textual analysis of Qur'anic discourse. The study provides first an informative theoretical foundation of text linguistics; this includes the definition of text linguistics, the ie o lution of text linguistics, text types, texture in text linguistics, Qur'anic text structure, pragmatics in text linguistics, genre in text linguistics, and Qur'anic text linguistics. All these notions are theoretically discussed and applied to the Qur'anic text in general and Q5 in particular. The study then moves on to shed light on stylistics, stylistic analysis of Q5, stylistic features of Q5, rhetorical analysis of Q5, linguistic analysis of Q5. The thesis, then, looks into Schools of Qur'anic exegesis, definition of Qur'anic exegesis, and classification of Schools of Qur'anic exegesis, types of Qur'anic exegesis, and differences in exegetical views. The study moves on to discuss the School of linguistic exegesis that includes stylistic exegesis as well The study has also discussed the historical development of Linguistic exegesis, the notion of inimitability of Qur'anic discourse, linguistic/stylistic inimitable features of Qur'anic discourse, the Andalus School of exegesis and Muctazili School of exegesis. This thesis also deals with applied translation studies of Q5, Qur'an translation, key definitions of translation, equivalence in translation, and problems of translating Q5. These problems have been divided into four categories: grammatical problems, semantic problems, phonetic problems and stylistic problems. Furthermore, the study has shed light on stylistically different but grammatically similar patterns (al-mutashabihat) of Q5.
