Summary: | Some aspects of the use of solution spectrofluorimetry, as applied to the determination of trace quantities of metals in solution, have been examined. The investigation of quinine as a spectrofluorimetric primary standard was followed by using Quinine as the basis of a scale of reaction sensitivities. The use of Quinine in the determination of Quantum yields of fluorescence for some standard substances was also developed; at the time of writing, this procedure is being employed on a routine basis in the research group. Several azomethine (Schiff base) compounds were prepared with some metal ions investigated. From this, an analytical method was developed for the spectrofluorimetric determination of aluminium using salicylidene 2, amino- phenol. In view of the lack of selectivity of the reagent, a simple clean-up procedure was devised employing a diethyldithiocarbamate extraction of the interfering ions into ethylacetate. The reaction of salicylidene 2, aminophenol with gallium was also investigated but was found to be of limited analytical value. The preparation, structural determination and chelation reactions of the cage molecule bis salicylidene 2,3, diaminobenzofuran(SABF) have been described. A spectrofluorimetric method and extraction Procedure for magnesium have been developed and have been applied to the determination of magnesium in blood plasma and municipal water samples. The fluorogenic reaction of gallium with this reagent has also been investigated. specific determination of terbium using sulphosalicylic acid and ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid has been described together with an examination of similar rare earth energy transfer systems. In the final chapter, some suggestions for future work have listed, and at the time of writing, some of these suggestions are being examined in detail.
