A contribution to the development of educational strategies within pharmacy

This submission outlines my contribution to pharmacy education over the course of my career both as a practising pharmacist and as an academic. The work culminates in the design and implementation of a new integrated clinical curriculum within the University of Sunderland, School of Pharmacy. The overarching aims of my project were: • To develop educational strategies, which integrate science and practice knowledge and skills and help students and pharmacists apply these to the care of patients; • To develop an integrated model of undergraduate pharmacy, teaching and assessment; • To develop integrated and progressive practice experience within the MPharm curriculum; • To develop material to support decision making for advanced pharmacists and those engaged in a prescribing role. My work provided the first Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programme to be accredited within the UK to the 2011 General Pharmaceutical Council Standards Future Pharmacists: standards for the initial education and training of pharmacists. I designed and led the development of a novel curriculum followed by the practical implementation of the programme to students. The curriculum encompassed an integrated and progressive scheme of work-based learning and has been widely acknowledged as a state-of-the-art undergraduate pharmacy programme by a range of experts. I also produced a template and methodology for other institutions to use in the pursuance of accreditation to the new standards The projects within my submission include multiple published articles and contributions at a national and international level within pharmacy education. The work has been acknowledged by experts in their field as being original and having a positive contribution to the profession as a whole.
