Summary: | This thesis investigated the formation of zirconium molybdate (ZM) (ZrMo207(OHh)2H20) crystals in conditions designed to reflect those found during the processing of spent nuclear fuel, in which these crystals are seen to form. Greater understanding of the formation of ZM was sought by studying the effect of many chemical species, including many known to be present in the mixture and a number of others specifically selected. The final goal was to provide means to control the creation of ZM crystals which exhibited advantageous physical characteristics. The ZM crystal morphology was found to be highly influenced by a few species which gave rise to several newly characterized novel crystal forms of ZM that exhibited interesting rheological and packing properties. |
