Description
Summary:The effects of fuel properties on the primary and secondary breakup of the diesel jet have been investigated. Experiments using a long working distance microscope have been carried out to assess the difference in spray formation caused by changes in specific fuel properties. Particular attention was paid to the optimisation of the lighting technique with a range of light sources tested. The use of a diffused laser allowed the acquisition of blur free high quality shadowgraph images. This allowed the visualisation of the processes that lead to the breakup of the fuel jet and velocity measurements at these locations. Images acquired further downstream during the secondary atomization regime allowed drop sizing to be carried out.
