Whilst different aspects of working with distress have been investigated previously, both within qualitative and quantitative research, a contextualised exploration synthesising different aspects of the experience was lacking. This study, therefore, researched the experiences of 15 Samaritan volunteers, using focus groups to collect data and presents a constructivist grounded theory of 'the experience of working with distress' which comprises the interdependent categories of 'changing reactions', 'the listening role' and 'finding ways to manage', each of which was influenced by context.
