Summary: | The metabolism of articular chondrocytes is influenced by the complex biophysical changes within cartilage tissue during normal activities of joint loading. These changes include endogenous electrical activity which has been detected in articular cartilage. The present work examined the influence of an applied direct current on chondrocyte viability, ECM synthesis and Ca2+ signalling with the aim to further understand chondrocyte metabolic mechanisms. |
