Description
Summary:Britain parted company from France in the early years of European monetary cooperation between 1970 and 1979. My thesis focuses on five factors as possible explanations of why the policies of the two neighbouring countries diverged on the issue: (1) key strategic objectives, namely, Britain's special relationship with the United States, in contrast with the necessity of France to achieve reconciliation with the federal Republic; (2) the legacies of the Empire; (3) economic considerations; (4) attachment to national sovereignty; and (5) the characteristics of the national party systems.
