Description
Summary:This thesis looks at vulnerability as the cause of poverty of a marginalized community, the Kheria Sabar, of Puruliya, West Bengal and has been carried out in the twin contexts of poverty reduction and future climate change in India. The failure of conventional poverty alleviation programmes necessitates the adoption of alternative approaches to the problem of poverty reduction in the country. This study aims to do that by looking at the poverty and marginalization of the Sabars as a structural problem caused by the vulnerabilities that the community faces in terms of the interaction of interlinked systems - historical, socio-economic, political, physical and spatial. The reduction of vulnerabilities is then seen as instrumental in alleviating poverty.
