Summary: | In the last few decades, the prison population has risen rapidly and now stands at over 82,000. Research suggests that up to 90% of prisoners have some kind of mental disorder or abuse substances (Singleton, Meltzer, Gatward, Coid, & Deasy, 1998). Significant recent attempts have been made to improve prison-based mental health services (HM Inspectorate of Prisons, 2007). However, very little is known about how prisoners themselves construe mental health problems, or which help-sources they would turn to if they experienced difficulties. |
