| Summary: | This thesis is a study of Henry Hunt and Feargus O'Connor, two wealthy landowners who achieved positions of pre-eminence in popular affections during the struggles for reform in the first half of the nineteenth century. For their labours, Hunt and O'Connor have been ill rewarded: instead of occupying a hallowed status in the radical canon, they have been dismissed as "demagogues". The thesis does not pretend to remedy the lack of any substantial biographical treatment of these "demagogues"; nor does it set itself up as a history of four decades of radical endeavour. It seeks to compare Hunt's leadership of the popular radical movement in the period 1819-22, with O'Connor's leadership in the years 1848-51. |
