The thrust of the thesis is on the <i>Usūl al-Nahw</i> (principles of grammar), its definition and evolution, the <i>Ihtijāj</i>, the relationship between <i>Usūl al-Nahw </i>and <i>Usūl al-Fiqh </i>(the principles of jurisprudence). It examines <i>al-Ihtijāj</i> (evidence) and the reasons behind its institution, and the exposition of al-Suyūtī’s <i>al-Iqtirāh</i> which Ibn al-Tayyib explained. It also discuses the political situation and the difficult conditions that Morocco had to endure in the time of Ibn al-Tayyib. It expounds on the effects of al-Zāwiyah al-Dilā’iyyah, on the social cultural and political developments. It also introduces Ibn al-Tayyib, and his scholarly status and scientific activity. The thesis focuses on issues discussed by Ibn al-Tayyib especially the use al-Hadīth as basis for <i>al-Ihtijāj</i>, and also examines the two explainers of <i>al-Iqtirāh,</i> Ibn ^CAllān and Ibn al-Tayyib, and compares the two explanations. It also offers a summary of the new findings of the study emphasising its significance in Arabic linguistics. The study also looks into the accuracy of observation and scientific integrity, and applying the process of accepted scientific methods of edition. Therefore the valuable manuscript will be preserved through the edition of a scientific work that reflects an outcome very close to that intended by Ibn al-Tayyib.
