| Summary: | The purpose of this study is to explore social work students’ perceptions of the Afrocentric Perspective. The study yields qualitative data on the students’ knowledge base and attitudes towards Afrocentrism, and its applicability to social work practice. An exploratory descriptive research design was used for this study. A convenience sample of forty-five graduate social work students from Clark Atlanta University participated in the study. The study found that the respondents demonstrate a keen sense of awareness and understanding of the general principles of the Afrocentric Perspective, and have a strong belief that Afrocentrism can serve as a viable alternative to more”traditional” social work perspectives. Further empirical studies of the Afrocentric Perspective, however, are warranted to conceptualize its role in social work practice. |
