The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural and artistic movement which enriched American life. Hughes’ body of work covers the entire range of the human experience, especially the experience of ordinary people. He believed that the role of the artist was to cover and illuminate every aspect of people’s lives. Part of this expansive philosophy towards art included giving a voice to African-American women and men who experienced both racist and patriarchal oppression. 2019-05-20T07:00:00Z text application/pdf http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/cauetds/161 http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1369&context=cauetds Electronic Theses & Dissertations Collection for Atlanta University & Clark Atlanta University DigitalCommons@Robert W.
