Summary: | The UNSAT 2 saturated-unsaturated flow computer code was used to estimate the largest reduction in infiltration losses associated with an impermeable bank-protection structure along the Santa Cruz River in Tucson, Arizona. Synthetic hydrographs were used to represent high and low riverflow events for natural bank and bank-protected conditions. Soil material properties were adjusted to represent the grain size distribution of the river alluvium. The hydraulic conductivity was simulated to be isotropic and homogeneous. The simulations showed that a bank-protection structure would reduce infiltration losses 12 to 14 percent after approximately two hours of flow. A seven to eight percent reduction in infiltration occurred after 24 hours of flow. |
