Summary: | Architecture is a formal expression of an idea. 'We perceive every form as the embodiment of an idea, every piece of work as a manifestation of our innermost selves. Only work which is the product of inner compulsion can have spiritual meaning.", Architecture must hold the intent to address aspects of human existence. Without this intent the architect has only to work with that which is capricious, and nothing more, leaving little to Question or discover. As architects we bring into being through making. We make, discover, Question, and uncover all in an effort to understand more. We make in order to begin
to know.
The objective of creating in architecture is to make an idea tangible, to give it form, to reveal the essence of the intangible. It is only after this point is reached that the nature of the intent can be Questioned, and what is important for the expression of the ideal can be determined. Ceaseless making and Questioning
not only distill the properties of that which is made, but uncloud and clarify the essence of the idea. With each removed layer the unblemished idea is revealed and understood, bringing the made closer to the mind.
This thesis is about the accretion of an architect. It is an attempt to demonstrate design goals as well as shape thoughts that define a position on architecture, to provide an armature and direction for the lifelong studies and investigations that lie ahead. Although the projects in this thesis differ in their concerns, they
share that which is universal in art and architecture, an intent to express an idea. === Master of Architecture |
