Summary: | Background radioactivity from radium has long existed in ground and surface waters of the United States, but in the last 15 years radium has become a consequential unnatural contaminant of waters. The onset of the atomic age initiated the increased processing of uranium ore for its uranium content. Radium is a daughter product and a by-product of uranium ore and its purification. The uranium refinery wastes are released into streams in which all forms of aquati life are exposed to the radioactivity of the radium contaminated waters. |
