Description
Summary:Swine diseases, their incidence, their classification and their distribution are important aspects of the swine industry in Canada. The relative importance of any one condition can become apparent only when all the knowledge currently available is completely analysed. It was suggested that, in order to determine where further research or control measures should be concentrated, it would be desirable to establish, by survey, where the areas of greatest need might be. To the author's knowledge no such survey of swine diseases has been previously undertaken in Canada. <p> This thesis contains the results of a survey based on reports from diagnostic laboratories across Canada during five consecutive years. Analysis of the data revealed interesting and useful information on the incidence of diseases and disorders regionally and by years. Perhaps equally important, it was found that classification of diseases and disorders in swine lacks uniformity and definitiveness as presently applied in Canada. Proposals have therefore been advanced for improving the system of swine disease reporting.
