By analyzing the idea of two separate democratic theories, I would like the essay to test the actual applicability of the theories in an assessment of reasonableness. To have a significant difference in democratic ideas, the choice fell on deliberative democracy and polyarchy. The analysis is chosen to be performed in relation to the role of education for a democratic process. Partly the right to education but also what theories think about the requirement for education. In order to test the applicability of the theories in an assessment of reasonableness in relation to education, these have therefore been applied to Sudan. The country is in a significant transition phase, hopefully heading towards a democracy. A new election is planned for 2022. The country is characterized by internal conflicts, major societal differences and a difficult economic situation. Only 60% of the children in the country receive a chance to start primary school and dropouts before primary school is completed are many. Deliberative democracy demands a lot from its citizens, while polyarchy does not have as high demands. Although deliberative democracy can be considered a more desirable form of democracy, the thesis' conclusion is that polyarchy is to a greater extent more applicable. In a country with great societal challenges, polyarchy, with lower demands on citizens, can be considered a more suitable and applicable alternative, even though it is not more reasonable for that matter. Polyarchy can perhaps function as the bridge towards a hopefully democratic Sudan in the future. Keywords: Democracy, applicability, education, deliberative democracy, polyarchy, Sudan.
