Summary: | This paper shows that Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) systems can be developed at lower costs, less risk and with a faster time to market than a traditional developed IT system. The primary reason for this is that SOA enables reuse; by loosely coupled reusable services and business processes. However, this is not the main benefit; still a great side effect. SOA can and should deliver good value for the business. The main benefit with SOA is therefore to create new and better opportunities for the business. Today’s rapid changes and fierce competition increases the importance of flexible enterprises; SOA has the ability to develop and modify services quickly which leads to flexible and thus winning enterprises. It is important to keep in mind that SOA is an architecture, not a technology. Like any other architecture one finds value over time; long term thinking is important in the implementation of SOA. This paper also covers a number of technologies common in SOA, and a prototype to show how these technologies can be implemented in a SOA system.
