Description
Summary:This study investigates the relationship between unemployment and the demand for higher education in Sweden using panel data. This study also briefly tries to investigate if there is a difference in the relationship mentioned between men and women. This study is using economic theory and earlier literature in an attempt of explaining the results obtained in the paper. This study has found that there exists a significant relationship between the unemployment rate and the number of new students enrolled in higher education. The result from this study implies that an increase in unemployment results in an increase of number of new students enrolled. The results also show a significant relationship between the demand for higher education and the proportion of already highly educated individuals within a region and a significant relationship with income as well. Lastly, the results found a small significant difference between men and women and how their demand for higher education were impacted by the unemployment rate.
