Description
Summary:AbstractIn recent years the science of social sustainability has been more frequently noticed in various academic papers. Social sustainability is one of the three categories of sustainable development and is a very complex subject with different variants of interpretations. In theory social sustainability is considered as important as its parallel counterparts, namely economic and ecological sustainability. The different existing definitions designate social sustainability either as a state that a community needs to reach or a process that society must undergo to reach that state. In this study, social sustainability is applied to the renovation of the million homes program. The homes built during the years 1964–1975 in Sweden, in various cities, were intended to rectify the housing shortage in Sweden. These houses were built as functional buildings rather than sustainable homes. It has now passed 50 years since the housing development and the buildings are in need of renovation. In addition to the need for upgrading, the majority of the million homes program areas are also in need of improved social sustainability. The million homes program areas or so-called suburbs are usually negatively represented in the media due to violence and criminally related activities. These suburbs also consist of poor social conditions regarding economic status between income holders. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the theoretical and practical conditions related to the renovation of housing within the million homes program. Järfälla is used as the case study area to analyze how the renovation of the houses changes the physical and social environment. Qualitative research methods such as questionnaires and literature studies, were used to gathered information to produce a result. The result of this study shows that the renovation of the housing within the million homes program in Järfälla is primarily aimed to improve and extend the housing sustainability in the long term. According to the renovation plans, facades, ceilings, balconies, windows and ventilation systems are to be renovated. These renovations will help improve the indoor climate and increase the area's attractiveness. The result also shows that due to the connection between the social and physical sphere the authorities' in Järfälla promotes social sustainability by renovating parks and reinforcing integration aspects in the community. The renovation of the million homes program houses and the renovation of the surrounding environments, will together increase security, integration possibilities and counter segregation in the community.
