Skogsmarksarealens utveckling under 30 år och skogens olika värden : En jämförande studie mellan Norrtälje kommun och Tierps kommun

Today big parts of the world are experiencing deforestation due to expansion of agriculture and illegal logging among other things. Much of this deforestation is taking place in the tropical regions of the world. At the same time there is a reversed trend in developed countries where many of them has seen an expansion of their forest resources. This trend has been called the forest transition. In this study I do a comparative analysis between two municipalities in Sweden: Tierp - a municipality whose forest area has been increasing and Norrtälje - a municipality whose forest area has been decreasing. In studying these municipalities I have tried to identify what affects the development of the forest resources in each municipality. The results show that in Tierp an expansion of the forest have mostly been due to increased afforestation activities within the forestry industry in that region. In Norrtälje whose forest areas have been declining the loss can be attributed partly to urban expansion and the municipality’s smallholder ownership pattern.
