With ideas of identity and difference as a starting point the theoretical framework is then developed with ideas from the new critical security studies including key subjects such as attributes, risk, imaging and visualisation. The study will be executed with the use of a discourse analysis approach using newspaper articles and chronicles as the principal empirical material. The analysis will then follow two separate themes. Firstly, the different threats and subjects of security will be deduced, and also, how these social constructions inevitably create each other and require each other to continue existing. Secondly, I will analyse the visualisation‟s role in constructing these threats and subjects, regarding both the language of images and the projection of inner images. The analysis ultimately showed how no general threat or subject was apparent after the terrorist attacks in Stockholm, rather, a great amount of constructions existed and they were all dependent on each other to exist. The many forms of what “we” were in this case could not exist without the many forms of “them”, and vice-versa. The study also showed how the visual played a great role, both in how we through sight separated ourselves as sovereign from threats and also how this helped us construct these threats as inner stereotypical images of, for example, “terrorists”.
