Summary:The purpose of this thesis is to examine the political discourses regarding ideals of the teacher profession in the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet in 1962. This is done through a critical discourse analysis of the editorial articles concerning school and teachers. The articles are categorized through the theories of the major functions of education formulated by Gert Biesta; qualification, socialization and subjectification. The analysis shows that the function of qualification is what is focused on most in relation to teachers’ role as educators. It is foremost Svenska Dagbladet that focuses on this function when emphasizing the importance of substantial education in all school subjects. Aftonbladet accentuates the socialization function of teachers’ role and advocates for a focus on raising democratic citizens. The subjectification function of the teaching profession through education is not as prioritized in the debate. All through the debate a kind of struggle for language can be found which shows how the papers ideological backgrounds exemplifies through their discourses. This is interpreted to have impacted social practices intending views and expectations on the teacher profession.
