About 72% of Swedish powerlifters have injuries, mostly in the lumbar and hip areas. There is a lack of further cate-gorization of injuries in relation to which specific physical problems the powerlifters have. Researchers in sports medicine are looking for ways to clinically diagnose injuries in order to develop preventative measures. Aim: Develop a protocol for examination and assessment of pain and function in powerlifters with hip and lumbar injuries, and evaluate its applicability. The protocol could then be used in future studies to determine the characteristics of injuries. Method: An examination protocol was created by a group of physiotherapists after reviewing literature in physiotherapy, orthopedic manual therapy (OMT) and motor control. Applicabil¬ity was evaluated through examination of eight powerlifters. Four powerlifters were examined twice by two independent OMT-physiotherapists. Results: The clinical applicability for the examination protocol was good. Examination took about an hour, and the protocol allowed the physiotherapists to describe a diagnosis with good agreement between physiotherapists. Analysis of the deadlift/squat were thought crucial for the assessment of the powerlifters’ present injuries and it was suggested more lumbopelvic motor control tests and trial treatment was added. Conclusion: The protocol was shown feasible to describe the character of pain and injuries in powerlifters. However, before use in larger studies, it is recommended that the protocol is further tested on a larger number of subjects to evaluate whether the content of the protocol should be expanded.
Validerat; 20160610 (global_studentproject_submitter)
Student thesisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/bachelorThesistexthttp://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-44596Local 25fa871a-6a3c-40b6-9a1f-e771fa09a28bapplication/pdfinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess
