Authors: Ida Lilja & Evelina Andersson Date: 2014-10-21 National values. You probably wonder what it is, and that is what we intend to give you an answer to in the following pages. We will try to depict what a statutory, national value can represent for a difference in the work with elderly people in municipal eldercare within the own home. By qualitative interviews with personnel in six different working groups, we tried to find the answer to what the national values stands for and if it really represents the base as the name implies. In the analysis of the interviews we used a problematization of the components of the national values and the terms of empowerment and systems theory. The results we got gives a good overview of how the national values is applied. Among the personnel it was revealed that there is a consensus on what a good national value is. The national values constitute a base for their work, which in turn leads to better health and a worthier life for the caretaker. The interpretations of the different concepts we have used in our study turned out to be very individual. There is a complexity about the concepts that can have several meanings. Key words: Self-determination, dignity, inclusion, treatment and respect
