Description
Summary:This thesis studies the role of the German state of Bavaria both on a national and European level.   The purpose of this study is to investigate how a state with as much tradition and patriotism as Bavaria is handling its position in the European Union – at a time when there is an ever increasing number of anti-EU political parties as well as a financial crisis.  The material being used ranges from constitutions to newspaper articles and even entire books which cover Bavaria’s position in its own country as well as in the EU. The aim of this study is remain as coherent to the present as possible. This study is not meant to be historical; however, in order to get an understanding of the role of Bavaria, some references to the past are necessary. After studying the state’s status and its goals and its achievements in Germany and the EU, the hypothesis suggests that Bavaria plays an important role politically and economically both in Germany as well as in the EU. Furthermore, this study concludes that Bavaria and its government are consequently involved in EU-related matters and that the state is more at an advantage than at a disadvantage by being a member of the European Union.
